The Salvation Army of the Syracuse Area offers over 40 distinct services to residents of Onondaga County and serves over 40,000 individuals each year. Many of our programs would not be possible without the thousands of hours that are donated each year by our generous volunteers. Below are some of the programs where volunteers are most needed.
Day Care Centers & After School Program
The Salvation Army of the Syracuse Area operates three licensed, quality Day Care Centers in the Syracuse Area. We are committed to providing quality care to all families who need child care outside of the home. Our centers offer a clean, safe and nurturing environment. Volunteers must be over the age of 16 to assist with diapering and/or toileting, feeding and lead recreation activities from children ages 5 weeks to 5 years.
The After School Program is a licensed quality day care center for children 5 – 12 years old that provides after school supervision and activities. Volunteers must be over the age of 16 and willing to work with children with homework, play games, read or assist with arts and crafts projects.
The Food Pantry provides help for those seeking food, shelter and other basic needs. Volunteers will help food pantry staff sort, stock, package and distribute groceries for needy families. Some lifting of heavy items is required.
The Senior Center provides opportunities for socialization and wellness that support independence for our community’s seniors. Nutritionally balanced breakfasts and hot lunches are served to all participants. Volunteers help serve meals to the elderly, offer companionship and participate in recreational activities.
The Emergency Shelter is a 50-bed, co-ed shelter and counseling service for homeless women and families. It provides meals, casework services and help finding a stable income and living situations. Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday from 4pm to 6pm and Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 11am to assist in preparing and serving meals. Volunteers must be over the age of 18 or over 14 if accompanied by a parent or guardian.
If manual labor is what you are looking for, our Facilities Department has any number of projects from cleaning, painting, to light plumbing and carpentry.
The Development and Human Resources Departments are always looking for administrative support with basic office tasks.
