8/30/09 - In response to fires that prompted evacuation and a declared state of emergency in California's Los Angeles and Monterey counties, The Salvation Army has been working to provide relief to affected residents in southern California.
At Crescenta Valley High School in La Crescenta, Salvation Army staff and volunteers provided a full breakfast of eggs, pancakes, fruit and oatmeal to more than 150 evacuees, thanks in large part to donations from a local Ralph's Market and McDonald's. Lunch will be provided by another agency and The Salvation Army is remaining on standby at this location to provide dinner services as needed.
The Salvation Army is also providing support services for an evacuee population at La Canada High School and is serving meals to approximately 60 people displaced by fire at Highland High School in Palmdale. These numbers could increase if the fire continues to escalate. Approximately 20 evacuees and staff at Tujunga's Verdugo Hills High School shelter are also receiving aid from The Salvation Army; and the organization is on standby to help as needed at the shelter established in Santa Clarita as well.
Salvation Army disaster services staff are in constant contact with emergency first responders as well as with Red Cross case management personnel in preparation to assist residents of homes destroyed in the Big Tujunga Canyon area yesterday.
To support The Salvation Army's ongoing relief efforts, donations earmarked for "Southern California Wildfires" can be made online, by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY or by mailing a check to your local Salvation Army.
