One Week After Flooding The Salvation Army Continues to Help

Released 6 July 2013

The Salvation Army: Always there when and where you need us.

(Herkimer, NY, July 6, 2013) – One week after devastating floods in the Mohawk Valley and city of Oneida, The Salvation Army continues to help those communities.
Since Sunday, The Salvation has served 5,914 meals, 635 snacks and 11,508 drinks along with 1,201 clean up kits and distributing 173 hygiene kits. Over 270 volunteers have provided 2,160 hours of time to help those in need.  Officers and volunteers provided emotional and spiritual support to 300 persons. The statistics cover both Herkimer County and the City of Oneida.
Salvation Army continues to provide mobile feeding vans roaming in Herkimer and Mohawk and the city of Oneida in Madison County.  Fixed sites where water, clean up kits and food are distributed can be found on Main Street in Mohawk and on Wilson Street in Oneida.
“The United Way of the Valley and Utica has been a wonderful community partner. They provided us with additional clean up kits and gas cards.  The gas cards were donated to the United Way by a generous donor.  They are $20 cards available to Herkimer County residents.  The cards will be distributed next week and we will let the public know how to obtain them with proper identification,” said Major James Purvis, incident commander for The Salvation Army.

The Empire State Division of The Salvation Army covers 48 counties in upstate New York and one city in Pennsylvania (Sayre, Pa.).  Our annual Red Kettle Campaign in November and December helps our 42 community and worship centers, service areas in Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse and 167 volunteer driven service units raise funds that remain in each community to help those in need.

About The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church established in London in 1865, has been supporting those in need in His name without discrimination for more than 130 years in the United States. Nearly 30 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through the broadest array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children. 82 cents of every dollar The Salvation Army spends is used to support those services in 5,000 communities nationwide.
