Christmas In July

Too many New Yorkers living in or on the verge of poverty miss out on summer as we know it, especially given the current economic climate. The Salvation Army Greater New York Division's "Kettles in July" Campaign will help give struggling New Yorkers the safe and happy summer they deserve. For the week of July 13, Salvation Army bellringers will be out in full force collecting donations for summer assistance.

Increased unemployment
For most of us, the thought of summer holds a certain carefree magic. This is not the case for New Yorkers living in or on the verge of poverty-especially those who are recent victims of today's diminished economy.

Over the course of last year approximately 270,000* residents of the New York metropolitan area have lost their jobs and the stiffly competitive employment landscape has made it much more difficult to find new ones.

More New York professionals who have never had trouble finding work before are being forced to turn to social service organizations for help with their basic needs.

Increased need for food assistance
Salvation Army pantries in the hardest hit neighborhoods are seeing a jump of 100 and even 200 percent in the number of men and women seeking food assistance. And pantry staff report serving more and more surprising faces, from former white collar personnel to college students who are struggling to find part time jobs.

Children slipping through the cracks
This summer will be difficult for these new clients and their children, as it is for others with limited funds. For many, summer is a time for kids to break free from school desks for activity-filled camps, swim teams, and more time with mom and dad. It is also a time for vacations, outdoor meals, and family reunions.

In contrast, for parents who are struggling financially, summer means an uphill battle to find affordable childcare and the guilt of being unable to pay for family outings. For their children it can mean endless days watching TV alone or aimlessly wandering the streets.

Your donation
For far too many New Yorkers-both the recently poor and those who have long-struggled-summer can be the most challenging season rather than one of fun and community. Your contribution to the "Kettles in July" Campaign will help. For information on how you can give the gift of summer to your neighbors contact your local Salvation Army. Or take action right now by making an online gift.
