Updates

 

Salvation Army feeding and service operations continue in response to Hurricane Sandy.

  • The most heavily impacted areas including New York and New Jersey where coastal devastation and flooding remain major issues.
  • West Virginia and Maryland are facing a different kind of disaster with record snowfalls leaving thousands without power.
  • Salvation Army personnel are continuing to assess damage today and are moving to the areas of greatest need in coordination with Emergency Management personnel.

 

Current Salvation Army activities in the most heavily impacted areas include the following.

 

In New Jersey:

  • The Salvation Army is serving hundreds of people at shelters throughout the state. This includes service in Atlantic and Hunterdon Counties.
  • Starting today, The Salvation Army is also providing food, hydration and emotional and spiritual care to first responders in Freehold, NJ.
  • In Atlantic County, The Salvation Army is providing three meals per day at a special needs emergency shelter.
  • Feeding, diaper wipes and emotional and spiritual care were provided to 240 people at a shelter in Teterboro, NJ.
  • A Salvation Army mobile feeding unit (canteen) has also deployed from Western Pennsylvania to support efforts in the state.

 

In New York City:

  • Officials from the Office of Emergency Management have appointed The Salvation Army as the lead agency for the City's Food Access Plan, to coordinate efforts ensuring access to food for city residents.
  • For the next few days The Salvation Army will be serving food at Seward High School in lower Manhattan where 1,000 people are being fed breakfast, lunch and dinner.

 

In Maryland and West Virginia:

  • The Salvation Army is serving in portions of Western Maryland and West Virginia where more than two feet of snow have left thousands without power in frigid temperatures.
  • In Cumberland, MD, The Salvation Army worked with the National Guard to help 100 senior citizens evacuate from a local senior home, providing 125 meals for the trip to a nearby shelter.
  • The Salvation Army is also running shelter and feeding operations throughout West Virginia at multiple locations in Charleston, Beckley, Grafton, Bluefield and Martinsburg, WV.

 

Elsewhere:

 

  • In Northeast Ohio, The Salvation Army has partnered with the American Red Cross to provide meals at 3 shelters.
  • The Salvation Army is serving meals and drinks from canteens in several coastal communities in Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia.
  • In Nashua, NH, The Salvation Army provided meals to personnel at the Emergency Operations Center and also delivered clean-up kits to the Hampton, NH area.
  • In Bridgeport, CT, The Salvation Army is feeding 450 seniors three separate sites.

 

Nationally:

  • The Salvation Army maintains a fleet of disaster vehicles and supply warehouses across the United States to enable speedy mobilization.
  • There are more than 300 emergency response vehicles in the eastern and southern United States alone and nearly 600 units nationwide.
  • These units are able to serve thousands of meals and drinks per day when operating at full capacity.
  • In addition to food, hydration, and emotional and spiritual care, The Salvation Army is also prepared to provide:
  • o Clean-up kits containing brooms, mops, buckets and cleaning supplies
  • o Hygiene kits
  • o Shower units
  • o First-aid supplies
  • o Communications support

 

Monetary donations are the most critical need as supplies and personnel move into the areas of greatest need.

  • The Salvation Army is extremely gratified for the continued support of the donating public.
  • To date, the Army has received nearly $700,000 in online donations alone to support relief efforts.
  • Donors are encouraged to give online at www.SalvationArmyUSA.org or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY (1-800-725-2769).
  • You can also text the word "STORM" to 80888 to make a $10 donation through your mobile phone; to confirm your gift, respond with the word "Yes."*
  • Those interested in volunteering should register at www.disaster.salvationa rmyusa.org. Please note that disaster service training is a prerequisite for volunteering in a disaster zone and not all registered volunteers will be called on to serve.
  • At this point, in-kind donations, such as used clothing and used furniture, are not being accepted for hurricane relief. However, these items are vital to supporting the day-to-day work of your local Salvation Army. Please consider giving these items to your local Salvation Army Family Store or dial 1-800-SA-TRUCK (1-800-728-7825).
  • Checks may be made out to The Salvation Army Disaster Services Center, PO BOX 1959 Atlanta, GA 30301. Please designate "2012 Hurricane Season" on all checks.

Your donations make a real difference.

  • A $10 donation feeds a disaster survivor for one day.
  • A $30 donation provides one food box, containing staple foods for a family of four, or one household cleanup kit, containing brooms, mops, buckets and other cleaning supplies
  • A $100 donation can serve snacks and drinks for 125 survivors and emergency personnel at the scene of a disaster
  • A $250 donation can provide one hot meal to 100 people or keep a hydration station operational for 24 hours
  • A $500 donation keeps a Salvation Army canteen (mobile feeding unit) fully operational for one day

 

The Salvation Army is one of the nation's largest providers of disaster service and responds to hundreds of disasters across the country each year.

  • Hurricane Katrina (August 2005): The Salvation Army provided more than 5.6 million meals to survivors and first responders of Hurricane Katrina, and 2.5 million people were assisted with emergency food, casework, emotional and spiritual care.
  • Haitian Earthquake (January 2010): The Salvation Army packaged and delivered more than 10 million meals to Haiti, and more than 27,000 survivors were treated at Salvation Army medical facilities. Additionally, The Salvation Army distributed approximately 8,000 hygiene kits.
  • U.S. Tornado Outbreak (April & May 2011): The Salvation Army served nearly one million meals and distributed 50,000 hygiene kits, and more than 10,000 people received emotional and spiritual care.
