Northern Light issues a $50,000 challenge to increase giving to support Thanksgiving meals for and increasing number hungry families this year.

Each year, The Salvation Army provides Thanksgiving food baskets – which include a variety of items such as full turkeys, stuffing and pumpkin pie – to individuals and families in need in Boston and throughout Massachusetts.

In the past two years, the organization has seen a dramatic spike in need, and projects a 50% increase in need over that time. Last year, need jumped 33% from 1,200 families served to over 1,600 and this year, 1,800 families are expected to apply.

With many local VolunteerBoston residents still seeking assistance this holiday, The Salvation Army is requesting help to provide turkeys and other Thanksgiving fixings from individuals wishing to help families in need. Thanksgiving baskets will be distributed on November 23rd in a coordinated, city-wide distribution effort at the five Salvation Army locations in Boston.<

“Many individuals are struggling to provide basic necessities such as food and clothing for their families this holiday season,” said Major Ivan Rock, General Secretary of the Massachusetts Salvation Army.  “For those experiencing poverty, the economy continues to be a real hardship and we’ve seen an increase in need – even in families where one or more adults are working. “

Northern Light, a leading provider of business research portals, has come alongside the efforts of The Salvation Army by providing a $50,000 challenge grant, so new gifts from individuals and corporations will be matched up to that amount.

“There are so many problems in the world that have multiple causes with potentially complicated solutions,” said David Seuss, CEO and founder of Northern Light, “In this case, we saw an opportunity for one-on-one charity—where we identified one problem and could provide the entire solution for at least one identifiable group of people.”  Northern Light is hopeful that other corporate and individual donors will be compelled to give by the $50,000 challenge

Regarding the generous gift, Major Rock said, “The Salvation Army’s mission is to serve all those in need, and we hope that this challenge provides a vehicle to those wishing to help families and seniors who are struggling this Thanksgiving. In fact, we have already received a $10,000 gift toward the Thanksgiving distribution.”

In addition to financial contributions, The Salvation Army is also accepting donations of turkeys and all the traditional fixings from those wishing to assist others this Thanksgiving and holiday season.  For more information, please visit
