The Elmira Salvation Army will kick off its Red
Kettle Campaign at about 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, in the Center Court at Arnot
Mall.
"If you are able to join us, that would be wonderful
support," notes Maj. Chris Stephens, who directs the local operation along with
his wife, Maj. Aubrey Stephens.
"As always, bell ringer groups are
needed. We are trying to have the month of December be our volunteer
month! If you or others are interested in ringing the bells in December, please
contact me at 732-0314, ext. 103."
Helping with Christmas Presents
Christmas presents for those who need assistance come
in a variety of ways -- through Red Kettle donations, through people adopting a
family, and through Angel Trees, where people pick up a tag with a child's name
and age and purchase gifts for that child.
"This year JC Penney is launching a campaign that
will work in conjunction with The Salvation Army, and will provide free
shipping to our door for purchases made online through the JC Penney
website."
Expecting Sharp Increase in Need
Christmas assistance applications are being taken at
The Salvation Army beginning Sept. 30, and continuing every Wednesday in
October. There has been a steady increase in the need to provide assistance.
"In 2007, we helped 396 families, and in 2008 we served 475 families. In 2009
we're expecting a sharp increase to over 600 families needing
assistance."
