GOWANDA -- Salvation Army disaster teams have been able to provide on-going flood relief in Gowanda, setting up a disaster center warehouse in the old fire hall and a food preparation operation in the new fire hall, thanks to enormous collaboration with other agencies and organizations, reported Salvation Army Field Representative Rod Ballengee.
Some donated space and equipment, such as the Gowanda Fire Department, the local Designer Pools, Lorenzo Trucking, and Love INC in Gowanda. Others donated supplies, such as United Methodist Church's disaster relief program (UMCOR), Church World Services, Love INC and Jubilee Grocery in Gowanda. Others provided food and water, such as the Seneca Indian Nation, Gowanda Correctional Facility, Wegman's in Hamburg, McDonald's of Salamanca, Nestle Purina Petcare, Food Bank of Western New York, and the Auxiliaries of Perrysburg Fire Department and Squad 10 Collins Fire Department.
Still others donated their time and muscle -- like Scout Troop 739 from Bolivar, NY.
"On behalf of our Empire State Divisional Headquarters, we would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to Scout Troop 739 for their assistance with the flood relief effort," noted Ballengee. "Their work was most appreciated, especially the time and effort they gave in our disaster center warehouse and distribution center in Gowanda."
The Boy Scouts included: Brandon Ray, Alek Friend, Mitchill Muir, Donnie Shiffer, Bryce Anderson, Zach Napora and Tyler Kasperski. The scout leaders included Bill Friend, Don Schiffer and Scott Napora.
Salvation Army teams have been in Gowanda since Aug. 10 when severe rains and flash flooding damaged some 400 homes and compromised the local reservoir. They have been serving meals and beverages to flood victims, first responders and relief works, and handing out clothing, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene kits.
