Members of the Montclair Citadel Band love making music. And by any standard, the music they make--whether the scherzo from Tchaikovsky's Symphony #6 or a familiar hymn -- is excellent.
Acknowledged as one of The Salvation Army's finest brass bands, the group has performed with luminaries including Wynton Marsalis, the Canadian Brass and Philip Smith, principal trumpet of the New York Philharmonic. It has delighted audiences in Canada, Bermuda, England and throughout the United States in such concert venues as Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, Alice Tully Hall in New York City, London's Royal Albert Hall and Victoria Theater at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
Several years ago, the band joined forces with Zdenek Macal and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in a bring-the-house-down performance of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture in the NJPAC Prudential Hall. In June 2006, the band appeared at the Gospel Arts Concert in London, England, along with the International Staff Band, the premier band of The Salvation Army. While the band is comfortable on the concert stage, its most important ministry is at The Salvation Army in Montclair, providing music to enhance the worship services each Sunday. They often extend that ministry beyond the Salvation Army building to nursing homes, hospitals and the familiar red kettle at Christmas.
Patterned after British brass bands rather than American concert bands, the sound of the all-brass Montclair Citadel is symphonic. Its repertoire ranges from transcriptions of classic favorites, solo works for some of the band's virtuoso performers, toe-tapping Sousa marches to hymn tune and contemporary Christian arrangements familiar to church-goers everywhere.
Montclair Citadel Band is made up of men, women and teenagers of diverse backgrounds and personalities. Professional musicians, business executives, educators, writers, Salvation Army officers play alongside high school and college students. They are united by their love for music and for God.
