Learning Center
The Salvation Army's Learning Center provides meaningful opportunities for learning, resulting in academic, emotional and social growth in children and their families. Enrichment activities and other hands-on-experiences with learning materials further promote enhancement in reading, writing, comprehension and math. Learning is provided in a warm, loving and accepting environment. Interactions encourage independence and foster healthy self-esteem.
Opportunities for social growth are provided through creative exercises that build cooperation, team building and negotiation skills. Character building activities encourage universal values. These are taught through a program called "Character Counts". The Portage County Salvation Army's Learning Center is being used as an example for other areas wanting to start up a similar program.
This program is highly organized and well structured to balance the student's need and parent involvement as well as working with the teachers. Currently The Learning Center is operating in four schools, but our vision is to secure enough funds to expand our Learning Center throughout Portage County.
