Honoring the Outstanding Leadership of Eliza Shirley

Eliza Shirley left London to come to America with her parents, personally determined to carry on The Salvation Army's work in Philadelphia. She walked the streets in search of an affordable meeting place, and dedicated her life's work to continuing the mission of doing the most good for those in the most need. Soon after they arrived in America and opened their first meeting space, they were expanding to serve West Philadelphia, and the rest is history.

Bill Burke to Chair Salvation Army National Advisory Board

The Salvation Army's National Commander, David Jeffrey, announced that Mr. William J. Burke, senior vice president of marketing with Nationwide Insurance in Columbus, Ohio, will serve as National Advisory Board Chairman for The Salvation Army. Mr. Burke was elected to the position unanimously at a full meeting of the Army's national advisory board. Beginning in January 2015, he will serve a three-year term leading the efforts of the board for the nation's largest faith-based social service agency.

Forman Mills Includes The Salvation Army in Give Back Giveaway

Forman Mills announced that the corporation is teaming up with Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell and Senator Tina Tartaglione to give out vouchers for winter gear in the West Philadelphia Forman Mills store and the Rising Sun Avenue Forman Mills store to less fortunate individuals and families, pre-selected with the assistance of The Salvation Army and other charities.

Neighborhood Corps Community Center Nourishes the Body and Soul of Our Struggling Neighbors

Hunger is rampant in Philadelphia. With a large homeless population and a decrease in government support, the need for food assistance is escalating. Aside from being unable to support themselves and their families, many people struggle to find the road to self-sufficiency. The devoted individuals at The Salvation Army Philadelphia Temple Corps Community Center understand this immense need, and work day in and day out to bring relief to those dealing with hardship.

Salvation Army Golden Gems Celebrate Love

"I have no family in this area, and I live alone. If I didn't have The Salvation Army to come to, I'd probably be sitting at home watching TV for most of my time," said Sharon, Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center Golden Gems member. "I've met so many new friends here that we even do things together outside of the center."

The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services Providing Meals for Those Displaced by Norristown Fire

In response to a deadly fire early Tuesday morning in an apartment complex on Swede Street in Norristown, The Salvation Army of Greater Philadelphia Emergency Disaster Services is currently providing food to 45 individuals, including evacuees and first responders, currently displaced to the temporary emergency shelter in the Norristown High School.
