THE SALVATION ARMY RAISES $558,000 DURING 2009 RED KETTLE CAMPAIGN
The Salvation Army Rochester Area Services is
reporting $558,000 was raised during the 2009 Red Kettle Campaign, accounting
for 90 percent of the $615,000 goal the
organization set at the start of the campaign this past November. The
final total includes donations made at kettle sites, as well as online and
through the mail. An estimated 8,700
individuals, organizations, community groups and businesses volunteered as bell
ringers to help make this campaign a success.
"We are grateful for the support the Rochester community has shown The Salvation
Army this past season," says Major John Hodgson, executive director of The
Salvation Army. "Everyone's generous donations of both
time and money, helped to brighten the holidays for many people in our area."
Donations from the campaign provided meals, toys and other
items for about 8,426 individuals through The Salvation Army's holiday assistance
programs. Funds from the Red Kettle Campaign will also be used through out the
year to assist those who turn to the organization for food, shelter and other
needs.

THE SALVATION ARMY MOBILIZING PERSONNEL, RESOURCES TO AID WITH HAITI RELIEF
The Salvation Army is mobilizing resources and personnel to
assist with the international relief effort in Haiti following a severe earthquake
that damaged much of the country's infrastructure, housing and commercial
buildings.
The organization is preparing to send more than 44,000 lbs
of pre-packaged emergency rations to the country, along with emergency disaster
teams. The Salvation Army is working with other agencies to identify
appropriate transportation for the food. As with all such relief efforts, The Salvation
Army will be a part of the initial emergency response while assessing longer
term needs of the residents.
Currently we are only accepting monetary donations to
support the relief work. Donations can be

TOPS FRIENDLY MARKETS IS THE DECEMBER CIVIC AWARD RECIPIENT
Tops Friendly Markets is the recipient of
The Salvation Army's December Civic Award.
In celebration of 125 years in Rochester,
each month The Salvation Army has been recognizing local organizations and individuals for
their contributions to the community.
Tops was recognized for its support of community programs aimed at
fighting hunger such as Foodlink, Meals On Wheels and The Salvation Army. This past November, for example, Tops donated
300 turkeys and over 60 free turkey coupons to The Salvation Army and Foodlink,
to help feed families during the holiday season. The award was presented at the Tops store in Brighton.

WALMART AND SAM'S CLUBS RECEIVE NOVEMBER CIVIC AWARD
The Salvation Army presented its November Civic Award to
local Walmart and Sam's Clubs for their contributions to the Rochester community and The Salvation
Army. Walmart and Sam's Clubs have a reputation in their
communities for opening their doors to groups such as girl scouts and veterans
to hold fundraising events. They also
allow The Salvation Army to stand kettles during the Red Kettle Campaign. About 25 percent of the national Red Kettle
Campaign donations come from Walmart and Sam's Club stores. The civic award was presented to Mike Judd,
store manager at Walmart in Henrietta, who will share the plaque with the other
Walmart and Sam's Club stores.
TOPS DONATES TURKEYS TO THE SALVATION ARMY
Tops Friendly Markets
donated 300 turkeys and 66 free turkey coupons through its More to Share Program to The Salvation Army and Foodlink on November 23, 2009 at the Tops on Jefferson Road in Henrietta.
Students from Jefferson Road School
and local mascots participated in the unique donation presentation as they
raced to load the turkeys into Foodlink and Salvation Army trucks. The turkeys will help feed families in need
this holiday season.
"The number of people coming to The
Salvation Army and local organizations increases during the holidays," says
Major John Hodgson, area coordinator for The Salvation Army. "We are grateful
for this donation which will put a nice meal on the table for a family in
need. We are also happy to be
participating in this event with Foodlink and Tops, to help raise awareness of
the ongoing need to help feed families during this time."
