A sweet celebration, 75 years in the making! The Salvation Army has partnered with Entenmann's Bakery, the maker of more than 100 sweet baked goods to celebrate the 75th Annual National Donut Day on June 1st, 2012 with a sweet program. The holiday, held annually on the first Friday of June, was established by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor The Salvation Army's "Donut Lassies" who served these treats to soldiers during World War I. HARTFORD - April 25th was a day of great food, fun and
fellowship for the officers and employees of Southern New England’s
Divisional Headquarters at the annual "Employee Appreciation Luncheon."
The dining room resounded with applause as the 2012 "Employee of the Year"
award was announced by Major Gregory Hartshorn, Divisional Secretary. Major
Lorena Jackson, who has been working as DHQ receptionist for the past eight
years, was the worthy recipient.
"To see Major Jackson’s face when her name was called said it all,"
Major Greg shared. "She was stunned and beaming from ear to ear. It was a
moving tribute to a worthy servant of God on our team here in Southern New

DANBURY – The Salvation Army is set to re-open its store in Danbury on Saturday. The remodeled shop will have a Family Store design to vastly improve the shopping experience for its customers and will be filled with bargain-priced clothing, household items, electronics, books, toys, furniture and collectables. Budget-conscious shoppers will also appreciate the store's even deeper "Family Day" discounts on Wednesdays.
Located on Main Street, the Family Store will re-open its doors at 9:30 am after considerable renovations, including a massive facelift of the front and new signage that gives a nod to the building's heritage as the old Sears and Roebuck property. DANBURY - The Salvation Army's Danbury Corps held its annual Community
Breakfast Fundraiser on Friday, April 27th at Anthony’s Lake Club. The
room was packed with many familiar faces, and some new ones also. Advisory
Board Chairman and Danbury Fire Chief Geoff Herald welcomed the excited crowd
to the event and then introduced Mayor Mark Boughton. The Mayor, a strong
supporter of The Salvation Army, thanked everyone for coming out and thanked
The Army for all it does to help people in need in Danbury. Next came Danbury
Corps Officer Captain Todd Hughes. He welcomed everyone, then proceeded by

BRITAIN - The Fourth Annual Corps Recognition Dinner for The Salvation Army of
New Britain was held on April 24th at Generale Ameglio Society Hall on Beaver
Street in downtown New Britain. There was a large, enthusiastic crowd, with
checkbooks in hand, in attendance to help support The Salvation Army and its
many programs throughout the City. Guests, dignitaries, board members, award
recipients, and donors filled the room looking for old friends, new
acquaintances, good deals and great food. And there was a good quantity of all
of the above. There were also both silent and live auctions throughout the
program to keep everyone interested and to help increase the excitement in the

HARTFORD - The 66th Home Builders Association Home and Remodeling Show took
place at the Connecticut Convention Center on March 16th, 17th, and 18th and

Veterans Affairs Connecticut Healthcare System – West Haven Campus, to
pay tribute to women veterans with a "Recognition Dinner" on Feb 14th. The

Alexandria, VA (January 30, 2012) - The Salvation Army raised $147.6
million through the 2011 Red Kettle Campaign, marking a new fundraising record
for the campaign. The new record, a 3.4 percent increase from 2010, highlights
the support of American donors who gave generously despite a continued slow
economy. In its 120th year, after beginning on the wharf in San Francisco in
1891, the Red Kettle Campaign has become a Christmas tradition that utilizes
volunteers to ring bells at 25,000 red kettles across the country. In 2011, The
Salvation Army expanded on the Campaign by incorporating new technologies at

opening a new store in Willimantic on Saturday, February 18th . The new store
is designed to improve the shopping
experience for its customers and includes 18,200 square feet of shopping space
filled with bargain-priced clothing, household items, electronics, books, toys,
furniture, and collectables. Budget-conscious shoppers can now also appreciate
the
store's even deeper "Family Day" discounts on Wednesdays.
Located at 1311 Main Street next to The ACCESS Agency, across the street from

HARTFORD - The 2012 legislative session opened on February 8 at the State Capitol and one of the highlights included The Salvation Army and Walmart being recognized on the floor of the House chamber for the "Republican Bell Ringers Campaign." Republican Representatives and Senators, Walmart store managers, The Salvation Army's officers, and kettle workers stood together during the Christmas Holiday season at their local Walmart stores and rang the bell for a "one hour match." Providence – The Salvation Army held a “Volunteer Appreciation Night” at their Citadel Headquarters on Broad Street on January 31st. The purpose of the evening was to say thank you to those who had donated their time, talents, and treasures to help with programs during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Providence Area Commander, Lt. John C. Luby said, “The thought was to honor our volunteers with a nice meal and fellowship, to give them a few small tokens of our appreciation and to present some awards to some exceptional people. HARTFORD – The Right Place, The Salvation Army’s Early Child Care Center on Sigourney Street, will become the new home of the “jungle mural” from Aetna employees through their Art of Giving Program. The colorful painting is made up of eight - 2’ x 2’ squares and depicts wild animals in a natural jungle habitat. The theme is something that the three to five year olds study in many of their readings and activities lessons. Aetna volunteers have dedicated their time and talent to create a masterpiece and improve upon their own team building skills.
