C.E.S. "KING OF THE CANS" ONCE MORE!

CanChallenge

HARTFORD - Consulting Engineering Services (C.E.S.) of Middletown, Connecticut, won The Salvation Army’s 23rd Annual Architects and Engineers Can Challenge. This year’s contest is "history" and C.E.S. has been declared "King of the Cans" once again! C.E.S. founder, President, and CEO, George Keithan Jr. explained, "the effort that our employees put into winning the competition to collect food for the hungry is unreal. Teams compete against each other for the 'special trophy' and the first place team gets to keep it for the year. Food is hidden all around the building because no one wants the other teams to know how much food they have gathered until judgment day. The contest is a lot of fun for everyone and, even better, the food goes to help people in need." The impact...

newbalancesNEW BALANCE WALKS THE WALK!

They Help The Salvation Army Too!

HARTFORD – New Balance - South Windsor/Avon and owner Mike Disibio have once again donated 50 pairs of sneakers to the Salvation Army's Greater Hartford Area Services for kids for the Christmas holiday.

In a radio promotion with The Rock 106.9 WCCC, New Balance donates 50 pairs of sneakers each year to The Salvation Army. This is the third year that the kids in Hartford have been the recipients of quality pairs of sneakers at a critical time of the year. While their parents are worried about food, heat, and housing, not to mention toys, New Balance has come through again with sneakers for kids to help these families at this critical time of year.

Michael Disibio, owner of the stores, said, “we are part of the community and we enjoy giving back to help our neighbors in Hartford. We believe in a quality product and we believe that struggling families deserve good sneakers too. It is a good feeling to think that some kids in Hartford will be walking around with high quality New Balance sneakers on their feet.”

The Salvation Army's North End Corps Officer Captain Brian Thomas said, “This is wonderful! We will be able to make a lot of mothers a little happier this Christmas. These sneakers are great and I know that the kids will love to wear them. I wish to thank Michael and New Balance for thinking of us.”

HARTFORD - The Right Place, School Readiness & Family Center held their annual graduation ceremony at Hartford's North End Salvation Army Community Center. Forty Nine graduates received their "diplomas" on August 22nd in a special ceremony surrounded by a large number of family members and friends. The program is operated by The Salvation Army and includes children from both the Sigourney Street and Nelson Street facilities and is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young People (NAEYC) which ensures the highest quality education for children.

The program had a little something for everyone. Children were called to the stage in classroom groups, introduced by their teachers and given their graduation certificates. Some children explained what they wanted to become later in life, from teachers, to firemen, to police officers . Other children performed a class song with the audience accompanying them. Most of the young boys and girls were all deck out in splendor with white shirts and ties and beautiful white dresses. They were all well behaved and looked well prepared for school to begin next week.

All the graduates were presented with back packs loaded with school supplies that were donated by employees at the Hartford law firm of Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge LLP. Harry C. Cion, Office Administrator at Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge LLP said, "The attorneys and staff at the Hartford office of Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge had a "Jean's Day" every Friday in August to raise money for backpacks and school supplies for the children at The Right Place. Coordinated by our Administrative Assistant Dianna Weeks, we were thrilled to raise enough money to purchase these items for the entire graduating class. We were grateful for the opportunity to give back to the community."

And now these kids are ready to go . . . let the school year begin!

The day started over $55,000 behind last year's cash contributions. It was a little slow at 5:30 AM when Ray Dunaway went on the air, but after 6:00 it started to pick up. And then it never stopped! Pratt & Whitney Day of Caring at The Salvation Army's Right PlaceHOW MANY PRATT LAWYERS DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE DAY OF CARING A SUCCESS?

HARTFORD - In the case of The Right Place in Hartford, it took 35 Pratt Legal Services Department employees to do a "world class clean up" for the United Way's Day of Caring on Friday August 28th. And what a success the project was! The advanced crew showed up at The Salvation Army Early Learning Center on Sigourney Street around noontime. Michelle Crawford, Kate Arthur, and Alex McHugh were the point persons. With a long project list, a digital camera, plenty of cleaning supplies and great enthusiasm, they were ready to go.

The staff at The Right Place and The Salvation Army were amazed and thrilled (no exaggeration) at how the Legal Services Day of Caring team (literally) tore into the preschool and whipped it into shape. There was a very long "to do" list and the group nailed everything on it, then took on more! There are many action photos to show the effort and the results, but here's a teaser on what went down (much of it in the pouring rain): assembly-line rubber floor tile scrubbing; trees lopped and limbed; piles of rotting apples carted away; classroom toys disinfected; a basement full of castoffs cleared out; hard-core weeding and weed whacking; ceiling tiles replaced; playground toys, climbers and bikes scrubbed; carpets cleaned; sandbox torn apart, and the (very dramatic) total destruction of a shed and (also dramatic) clean up of the shed site. Some of the team who were less wet and filthy than others by the end read to and did crafts with some very cute little attention-hounds. The project certainly succeeded in making The Right Place a better place for the little people that learn through play there.

A HUGE thank you from The Right Place & Salvation Army to the team (in no particular order): Christine Hwang, Raja Maharajh, Kim Caron, Ben Buckley, Aprile Ricardi, Kate Arthur, Steve Swigert, Mima Meshe-Esponda, Greg Fearn, Meg Sheehan, Joe Hillmon, Mary Martineau, David Burns, Rosemarie Tamiso, Kristine Murphy, Andrea Yalof, Cheryl White-Mink, Holly Moore, Debbie Baldyga, Teresa Bogacz, Pam Bryck, Bill Piotrowski, Laurie Kaufman, Ed Bushard, James Pfadenhauer, Mark Pearl, Amy Bisson, Jamie Karabetsos, Bob Williams, Tyler Morrison, Alex McHugh, Michelle Crawford, Chad McDaniel (who is back from his trip and is acting pretty normal) and Peter Gutermann (for moral support).
