NEW BALANCE PUTS BEST FOOT FORWARD AGAIN!

NBNE(L-R John, The Salvation Army’s North End Corps Officer Brian Thomas, Geoff, and store manager Dinu, help load the van with 50 new pairs of sneakers!)

HARTFORD – The Salvation Army's North End Corps is the recipient of 50 more pairs of New Balance sneakers. Michael Disibio, the owner of the New Balance stores in Avon and South Windsor has been donating sneakers to The Salvation Army for numerous years. What started out in 2009 as a Christmas promotion on a local radio station, The Rock 106.9 WCCC, has now become a "regular" donation several times a year! North End Corps Officer Captain Brian Thomas reflected, "Whenever the call comes in, we are ready to go. The neighborhood kids can always use new sneakers and we are very blessed to have Michael and New Balance helping us to meet such needs."

MASS MUTUAL PAINTED THE ARMY RED!

Or was it beige or brown?

NEMMHARTFORD – Volunteers from Mass Mutual arrived early to The Salvation Army's North End Corps, located on Nelson Street, ready to volunteer for their United Way Day of Caring project! Captain Brian Thomas, North End Corps Officer, greeted them with a warm welcome, a stack of projects, a pile of supplies, and a long wish list… a very long wish list! How they helped...

HIP HOP DANCES ITS WAY
INTO HARTFORD'S NORTH END CORPS

NEHHAs part of the Hartford's celebration of Black History Month, the North End Corps teamed up with the Community Renewal Team/Generations for an energized event, tracing the birth and evolution of Hip Hop and its positive role in the Black community. There was a disc jockey that played music from various stages of Hip Hop and presented an excellent slide show reviewing the history of the genre. Johnny Manselle, a well known local dancer, presented several dances, including break dancing. He also shared a brief history of the relationship of dance and Hip Hop, starting with B Boys and progressing through contemporary movements in Hip Hop dance.

CRT presented a dance group of girls, which included young ladies that participate in The Salvation Army and CRT/Generations programming, as well as a Zumba Gold demonstration. “The event was well attended and several of the grandparents took the opportunity to show some of their own dance moves,” said Captain Brian Thomas, North End Corps Officer. “This was a great event and excellent collaboration between CRT/Generations, The Salvation Army and the community.”

HUSKY SPORTS PRESENTS SPORTS CLINIC AT THE SALVATION ARMY
Husky Sports presents clinic at The Salvation Army Northend Corps

December 12, 2009
Hartford, CT - Husky Sports is a program headed by UConn's Department of Kinesiology and Sport Management. The goal of the program is to both reinforce and teach the making of positive life choices among Hartford North End children. Gianna Smith, and Rebecca Likar, graduate students who manage the Hartford program, said they decided to have the clinic because Captain McCoy and The Salvation Army have been instrumental in supporting the Husky Sports program through the use of their gym". There were representatives from all UConn sports teams. The youth that participated learned the fundamentals to the various sports. Thank you, and Go Huskies!

The Salvation Army & the Hartford Project
Join forces to provide a day of fun and fellowship.

Hartford, CT. The weather man predicted rain, but The Salvation Army and the Hartford Project had other plans! The day started off cloudy and cool, but as the choir started singing the people started gathering and the sun started shining. The clouds cleared and made way for a day full of fun and fellowship. Captain McCoy and the Northend Corps planned a flea market with vendors, gospel music and games for the kids. Ervin McCoy said "without the help of The Hartford Project we don't know what we would have done."

The Hartford Project is a group of churches that provides opportunities for their youth ministries to be involved in human services projects. THP, as it is called provided volunteers that manned the games and the food stands.

UPSUPS DELIVERS FOR
THE SALVATION ARMY

HARTFORD - Sixty plus United Parcel Service (UPS) managers participated in a "extreme makeover" at The Salvation Army's Hartford's North End Corps on October 31. The UPS managers were participating in their national "Global Volunteer Month" project and with the help of the United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut they picked The Salvation Army as their beneficiary this year.

Everything from cleaning, prepping, painting, sawing, hammering, shoveling to shredding was accomplished. Some employees even took time to read to the children enrolled in the early child care program. "These people came to work . . . really work!

It's unbelievable the way everyone pitched in and the volume of projects that they completed. We have so many wants and our clients have so many needs . . . UPS answered our prayers" said North End Corps Officer Captain Ervin McKoy.

Marge Niedbalski, UPS District HR Manager took time out from painting and changing light bulbs to say, "We're here to help the community, our children, the future UPS'ers. We want to help the people that we deliver to . . . . everyone is part of the Brown family so that's why we do it."

John Loughery, District Manager for South New England District which represents Western Massachusetts and all of Connecticut was proud to say UPS Global Volunteer Day takes place all across the United States and in all the countries that we deliver to.

It gives us an opportunity to give back to the neighborhoods that we serve." He also presented a "large" $25,000 check to Captain McKoy for a new playground for the children in the early learning program.
Thanks Brown!
