NEW BALANCE PUTS BEST FOOT FORWARD AGAIN!
(L-R John, The Salvation Army’s North End Corps Officer Brian Thomas, Geoff, and store manager Dinu, help load the van with 50 new pairs of sneakers!)
HARTFORD – The Salvation Army's North End Corps is the recipient of 50 more pairs of New Balance sneakers. Michael Disibio, the owner of the New Balance stores in Avon and South Windsor has been donating sneakers to The Salvation Army for numerous years. What started out in 2009 as a Christmas promotion on a local radio station, The Rock 106.9 WCCC, has now become a "regular" donation several times a year! North End Corps Officer Captain Brian Thomas reflected, "Whenever the call comes in, we are ready to go. The neighborhood kids can always use new sneakers and we are very blessed to have Michael and New Balance helping us to meet such needs."
MASS MUTUAL PAINTED THE ARMY RED!
Or was it beige or brown?
HARTFORD – Volunteers from Mass Mutual arrived early to The Salvation Army's North End Corps, located on Nelson Street, ready to volunteer for their United Way Day of Caring project! Captain Brian Thomas, North End Corps Officer, greeted them with a warm welcome, a stack of projects, a pile of supplies, and a long wish list… a very long wish list! How they helped...
HIP HOP DANCES ITS WAY INTO HARTFORD'S NORTH END CORPS
As part of the Hartford's celebration of Black History Month, the North End Corps teamed up with the Community Renewal Team/Generations for an energized event, tracing the birth and evolution of Hip Hop and its positive role in the Black community. There was a disc jockey that played music from various stages of Hip Hop and presented an excellent slide show reviewing the history of the genre. Johnny Manselle, a well known local dancer, presented several dances, including break dancing. He also shared a brief history of the relationship of dance and Hip Hop, starting with B Boys and progressing through contemporary movements in Hip Hop dance.
CRT presented a dance group of girls, which included young ladies that participate in The Salvation Army and CRT/Generations programming, as well as a Zumba Gold demonstration. “The event was well attended and several of the grandparents took the opportunity to show some of their own dance moves,” said Captain Brian Thomas, North End Corps Officer. “This was a great event and excellent collaboration between CRT/Generations, The Salvation Army and the community.”
