The Salvation Army is one of the best known and trusted
international organizations, and also known for its disaster services
"Compassion in Action" during the hurricanes. Locally, for almost 125
years "Compassion in Action" has been an everyday event as we meet the
needs of Bristol's less fortune citizens by not just giving them a
handout but a hand up.
If you are looking for a church that reaches out to the community
whether with a cup of water and refreshments for emergency personnel
during a local disaster, a meal for the homeless and hungry, or sharing
the gospel of Jesus Christ, come give us a try. The Salvation Army
Bristol Worship and Service Center is "A church dedicated to sharing
the Love, Hope, and Peace found in Jesus Christ." That's Compassion in
Action!

If you are looking for a church home come visit us. You can even enlist in God's Army!

THREE-ALARM FIRE IN TORRINGTON LEAVES 19 HOMELESS
The fire began on the second
floor of 775 Main St. shortly after noon, reported by the Torrington Fire Department. A resident was
cooking and a fire broke out on the stove and quickly spread through the wall
and to the attic. Strong winds fanned the flames and made it difficult to put
out the blaze.
The Bristol Emergency Disaster
Services Unit was dispatched at 4:30pm after Captain Matthew Morrison from the
Torrington Salvation Army began serving drinks to the firefighters.
Upon arrival of Bristol's mobile feeding
unit, dinner was requested and 70 servings of stew were served along with 35
bottles of water, 26 bottles of Gatorade, 57 snacks, 36 cups of coffee, and 6
hot chocolates. The Emergency Disaster Services Unit was in service for 7-1/2
hours.
Captain Morrison is working
with the Red Cross to assist those that were displaced by the fire.

arrival the fire department found the front of the house fully involved.
Bristol's
mobile feeding unit (Canteen) was dispatched to provide refreshments to the
firefighters and emergency personnel. After the canteen arrived pizza was
donated by a restaurant across from the fire scene and handed out with snacks,
coffee, hot chocolate, water and Gatorade.

BRISTOL SALVATION ARMY NEEDS YOUR HELP
With the rising
number of layoffs and rising costs of living more people are turning to the
Bristol Salvation Army Soup Kitchen and Emergency Food Pantry for help.
In past years, donations of non-perishable foods received during
the Thanksgiving & Christmas holidays would meet the needs of those
requesting assistance until mid May. This year, we have been receiving more
than 40 new families per month and have greatly reduced the amount of food that
we have on hand (see pictures below).
We thank our local stores Shop Rite, Stop & Shop,
Shaw’s, and Panera Bread for their daily or weekly donations, but much more is
needed to supply a balanced meal to those requesting help.
Thank you for all that you do for the Salvation Army and
together, we can “Do The Most Good” for the most people, in their time of need.
How YOU can help:
*Donate some non-perishable food items (veggies, potatoes,
canned meats, stew, soups, cereals, etc.).
*Have a food drive at your school, church, work, or place of
business.
*Make a monetary donation and ask others to donate with you,
or have a fundraiser.

CAMP EXPERIENCE FOR BRISTOL’S YOUTH
Sixteen children ages 8-12 boarded a Bristol Community Organization bus from Bristol Monday morning June 30th for a week at the Salvation Army’s Camp CONNRI. This week is Music Camp and each child will spend their time learning new music and fine arts skills, and much more. Upon arrival each child is checked in, given cabin assignments, and signed up for electives. Once this is done, the FUN begins!
Camp CONNRI is situated on 268 acres of rolling hills, overlooking a pristine 50 acre lake in Ashford, Connecticut. Campers enjoy a wide variety of activities including: swimming, hiking, fishing, boating, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, nature studies, arts and crafts and much more. The camp offers a safe, Christian environment that nourishes a child's physical growth, mental maturity, and spiritual enthusiasm.Activities are under the supervision of certified, experienced personnel, where the safety and welfare of all campers is a primary concern of every staff member. The Camp is proud to be accredited by the American Camping Association, the State of Connecticut, and The Salvation Army. Each year the Bristol Salvation Army is allocated 18 spots for children to attend this camp. We generally ask that the parents, if able to, pay a very small part of the cost for their child to attend.
If you would like to help sponsor a child, it’s not too late.

TEEN CREATES "MACK'S MORNING MEAL" FOR NEEDY
Reprinted from The Bristol Press
By: KAITIE SHEA
BRISTOL - City resident Mackenzie Goodrich has become a community service pioneer at the age of 16. Driven by her desire to reach out to the community, Goodrich recently instituted the city’s first soup kitchen program for the breakfast meal. Without a driver’s license, Goodrich decided that working at a soup kitchen was the most reasonable way to do community service. She soon discovered that both lunch and dinner meals are available every day of the week, at one facility or another, to those in need.
Knowing that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” Goodrich was surprised to find that not one organization in the city provided the crucial meal to the less fortunate residents. With a bit of help from her parents, Sue and Steve, Goodrich created a breakfast program called “Mack’s Morning Meal,” she said. The young humanitarian soon found the support she needed to bring her program to fruition through Bristol’s Salvation Army Worship & Community Center. Members of the organization generously offered their building and kitchen facilities to Goodrich and her cause, she said. Using monetary donations from her parish, St. Joseph Church, Goodrich officially started her program in the fall. With the help of five school friends and her parents, Goodrich hosted the first “Mack’s Morning Meal” event in late October at the Salvation Army. With substantial support from Shaw’s Supermarket, which donated 20 dozen eggs, and South Side Meat Market, which donated 15 to 20 pounds of bacon to the cause, Goodrich’s first event became a great success, she said. Despite heavy rains, about 40 people came to the breakfast, said Goodrich. Both she and her friends were blown away after personally witnessing how much hunger affects the city, she said.
From families with babies to older adults, Goodrich and her helpers saw people of all ages taking advantage of the breakfast. The recipients’ appreciation was overwhelming, she said.
MUMS, MUMS, MUMS
BRISTOL - It was a great day for a parade! Thousands of spectators lined the downtown
streets on a perfect fall day to see Bristol's biggest "Mum Parade" ever. Rumor was that the parade even started on time and lasted for over two-and-a-half-hours! There were bands, politicians, antique cars, marchers and plenty of music. The U.S. Army was there and so was The Salvation Army. The theme for this year's parade was "Our Heritage" and the message was delivered loud and clear by the Bristol Corps lead by officers Captains Mark and Charlene Hager. One quick look at the float and you would know what The Salvation Army is all about. Thank you to the donors, congregation and all the volunteers for their many hours of support. Captain Mark Hager said, "It's all about sharing the Gospel and showing the City of Bristol that we are Doing The Most Good."
