THE SALVATION ARMY APPRECIATES ITS VOLUNTEERS!
Providence – The Salvation Army held a “Volunteer Appreciation Night” at their Citadel Headquarters on Broad Street on January 31st. The purpose of the evening was to say thank you to those who had donated their time, talents, and treasures to help with programs during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Providence Area Commander, Lt. John C. Luby said, “The thought was to honor our volunteers with a nice meal and fellowship, to give them a few small tokens of our appreciation and to present some awards to some exceptional people. These people have been steady and frequent volunteers over and throughout the years, and we wanted to do something nice for them... so we did!
Approximately 80 guests were welcomed to the event by Major Gayle Luby, who
also delivered the invocation. The Rhode Island Social Services Director, Jaime
Comella, gave the guests a report on some information and statistics from the
holiday season and then everyone was treated to a video produced by The
Salvation Army's Envoy Jose Hernandez. The video was “fantastic”
according to Lt Luby, “each volunteer was called out by name and featured
in the video. It was a very entertaining show and I think everyone enjoyed
watching it.”
Then came the food, which is almost always a major part of any event that
The Salvation Army puts on... and this was no exception! Cheeses,
crudités, and sparkling punch were served for the opening greeting
period. Then came the main meal, consisting of roast beef, pork tenderloin,
rice pilaf, stir fried veggies, salad, and fresh baked rolls, which was then
followed by an amazing chocolate cake for dessert. “It was so sweet and
rich it made your fillings tingle.”
The guests were then entertained by The Salvation Army's own Providence
Youth Chorus, including kids ages 6 to 14, under the direction of Major Gayle
Luby, with assistance from Mrs. Rachel Rogers.
Special recognition plaques were given to Agnes H. Perry, Francisco Mendoza,
and Vincent Messina
for outstanding volunteer service - above and beyond. The program was closed
with a benediction from Providence Citadel officer Captain Kipp Allen and
everyone left with a full stomach and a smile on their face. For all those
recognized that night and who have helped volunteer for The Salvation Army in
other areas and capacities, thank you!
