THE SALVATION ARMY'S DONATIONS IN RHODE ISLAND
ARE FALLING BEHIND!
A Call to Action!
PROVIDENCE – It's December 19th already, there are
only 5 days left before Christmas, and The
Salvation Army’s fundraising targets for Rhode Island are coming up short
of this year’s goal. Traditional fundraising efforts, regular mail
appeals, and red kettles are down by almost 15%, compared to
this date one year ago, while the demand for services has doubled and
even tripled in some areas across the State.
Lieutenant
John C. Luby, Providence Area Commander said, “The number of unemployed
people remains high, the cost of food keeps increasing, an August hurricane and
an October snowstorm set everyone back - both emotionally and financially,
while the general economy has remained flat and uncertain. These are difficult
times for almost everyone! Each day, more and more families are coming to us
and asking for our help, but our fundraising effort is coming up short!
Christmas donations are used to support
programs of The Salvation Army in Rhode Island year round. The funds raised
support programs like, 'at risk - after school programs,' senior citizen and
veteran’s activities, grocery orders from our food pantry, and seasonal
events like toys and gifts for those in need and our Thanksgiving and Christmas
meal programs. We are highly dependent on the generosity of the good people of
Rhode Island to fund all these activities. Hopefully, when the public hears
about our kettle shortfall, they will write us a check or drop off a donation
to help assist the individuals and families that need our help the most during
this holiday season and throughout the rest of the year.”
Ultimately, people realize how important it is to help our neighbors who are
less fortunate, particularly as the need increases. Therefore, we ask that
everyone please be just a little more generous if they can to help us
reach, if not surpass, our goal and continue to serve people in need.
Even if you are not a frequent shopper where kettles may be located, you can
still donate online at www.salvationarmyri.org or give $10 to The Salvation
Army by texting GIVERI to 80888 and replying "Yes" to make your gift now!
