You may be aware that The Salvation Army has been blessed with a special gift of more than $1.6 billion dollars from Joan Kroc, the wife of McDonald's founder Ray Kroc.

Mrs. Kroc, and her husband, loved The Salvation Army. They have supported our organization for years, along with many other social service agencies. Her gift to The Salvation Army in San Diego, California created the Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center, which houses a world-class skating rink, swimming pool, music lessons, and many other recreational and spiritual activities for the community.

With this new gift, to be used by The Salvation Army throughout the United States, you may believe that "The Salvation Army no longer needs my support!"

That is not true at all!

Please understand that this special gift is restricted, and to be used only for developing and building brand new centers across America in urban crisis communities.

None of the funds from this wonderful gift can be used to shelter a family, serve a warm meal or any of our on-going programs and services here in Southern New England.

It is your support that allows us to help people in need every day with utility assistance, food vouchers, day care, after school programs, school readiness centers, adult day centers, "Shoes and Boots for Kids", senior programs, family shelters, summer camp and the other variety of programs in Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Perhaps someday, when the processes are put into place, we may be blessed with one of these new Kroc Centers, and even then, our fundraising to keep it running will be increased! In the meantime, please continue to support The Salvation Army.

We are so grateful that when those in need turn to us, we can count on you. If you have any questions about the Kroc gift, contact Lt. Colonel Steve Hedgren at (845) 620-7200.  To make a gift to The Salvation Army, please call us at 860-543-8400.
