CORPS COMMUNITY AND WORSHIP CENTERS The Salvation Army's centers for service, program and worship are the local Corps Community and Worship Centers. There are 29 sites located throughout Connecticut and Rhode Island.
Traditional and non-traditional Sunday worship services are held. Each Corps Officer (or local center leader) is an ordained minister who has been "commissioned" from The Salvation Army's School for Officer Training, a two-year degree program (or are in training), and many have advanced degrees as well. Each Corps Officer husband and wife team are equally ordained and function in all aspects of counseling and ministry.
Parishioners of the Corps are offered a wide variety of programs, including, for youngsters: Sunbeams, Girl Guards, Boys Adventure Corps, Teen Ministries, musical instruction, and bible study and for adults: Woman's Ministries, Men's Fellowship, recreation. These programs are available to the public, as is the opportunity to worship with us.
You do not have to be a member of the Corps to receive services or to attend programs.
The centers provide an outlet for programs to the community including after school programs, school readiness programs, sheltering, emergency assistance, homeless prevention, feeding programs and support to those who are seeking job skills.
Each center relates to the community in a variety of ways, with members of the community supporting The Salvation Army on Advisory Boards, Women's Auxiliaries, and outreach through the Service Extension program.
Many Corps Commanding Officers serve on local councils or boards, i.e. the United Way or FEMA, and also actively participate in other civic organizations like the Rotary or Kiwanis.
Some Corps have specialized programs to meet the needs of the community, often in other languages like Spanish or Laotian, or in the case of the New Hope Recovery Corps in Hartford -- to meet the need of people in recovery from addiction to alcohol or drugs, and their families.
You are invited to attend services or programs at your local Salvation Army anytime, please call the Officer(s) for more information.
SERVICE EXTENSION In the suburbs and rural areas of Connecticut and Rhode Island, 53 volunteer units operate as the Army's "Heart" and service delivery system in the community.
Designed to provide comprehensive emergency assistance, services can include food, housing, transportation, clothing, summer camp and other opportunities for children and adults, as well as other needs such as medical, dental and optical support. Referral services for alcohol and drug rehabilitation and emergency disaster activities are also offered.
There over 500 volunteers who serve on the Service Unit Committees, which are supported by the Service Extension Department located at Divisional Headquarters in Hartford. Units in Rhode Island are provided support from the Army's Regional Office located in Providence.
The Salvation Army is committed to providing services for those less fortunate without regard to race, creed, sex or immediate financial status. We network with many agencies to ensure that the client's needs are met in a holistic fashion.
If you would like to volunteer to serve on a Service Unit committee, or know someone who needs our help, contact the Service Extension Department at 860-543-8406 ext. 151.
